How to Choose a Mountain Bike Helmet That Actually Fits
A rider's guide to sizing, coverage, and safety tech so your next MTB helmet protects you and looks the part.
By Gold Crown Crew
Your helmet is the single most important piece of gear on the trail. It should fit like it was made for your head, sit level on your brow, and disappear once you drop in. Here's how to dial it in.
Measure before you shop
Wrap a soft tape measure around the largest part of your head — about a finger above your eyebrows. Write down the number in centimeters and match it to the size chart on the product page, not to a generic S/M/L guess.
Pick the right coverage
- Half-shell: Fast, breathable, great for XC and flowy trail days.
- Extended coverage / trail: More protection at the temples and back of the head. Our pick for most riders.
- Full face: Required for enduro race stages, bike parks, and gnarly features.
Fit test at home
Buckle up, shake your head side to side and nod hard. If the helmet slides or twists, tighten the retention dial. If your forehead is exposed or the front rides high, size down. If you feel pressure points after 10 minutes, size up or try a different shape.
